San Diego, CA – The Southern Caregiver Resource Center has partnered with the San Diego Estate Planning Firm California Estate and Elder Law offering service and guidance for family caregivers of adults with chronic and disabling conditions or diseases.
SCRC is an amazing, one-of-a-kind organization that focuses on the family caregivers. Very few organizations actually focus on family members who are in a caregiving position, not commercial facility-based caregivers.
To be eligible for SCRC services, a client must be assisting/caring for an adult with a cognitive impairing condition that occurred after the age of 18 (for example: dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease), or someone age 60 years and older in need of assistance with daily living activities. Services are for residents of San Diego and Imperial counties. All services come at no cost to the family caregiver. Both home and office visits are available by appointment.
California Estate and Elder Law (CEEL) is able to help SCRC deliver additional value for the caregivers that they serve by educating caregivers around the additional resources they may not be aware of such as: Veterans Aid and Attendance program as well as Medi-Cal Benefits and Long-Term Care Planning. To sum it up: CEEL is an extended resource that SCRC can offer to its caregivers.
SCRC is a non-profit organization and currently mostly government-funded, though they are actively working to expand individual, private donations to further their charitable cause and offer additional much needed programs for caregivers.
SCRC and CEEL will be holding joint educational sessions at various corporate groups for their employees since many of those employees either already are in a position of caring for aging parents (while also taking care of their own kids), or will soon be in this position. This “sandwich generation” refers to individuals who have children they are caring for while also needing to care for aging parents.
When asked for a comment, Elder Law Attorney Scott Stewart said, “It may be surprising to learn that typically less than 10% of the population have had a conversation about how they plan on caring for their aging family members. It may not be a comfortable conversation to have but still a necessary one. We realize that as estate planning attorneys, there needs to be more focus on how to care for clients during the last quarter of their lives.”
SCRC Executive Director Roberto Velasquez added, “SCRC is a proud Year-Round Corporate Partner of California Estate and Elder Law (CEEL) Southern California Institute (SCI); Strazzeri Mancini (SM); and The Founders Group (TFG), also referred to as Care to Know Family of Resources. The partnership will enable us to reach more working family caregivers, helping bring balance to their lives through education and direct services.”
